What Is SSC GD Exam Slot Selection?

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has rolled out a brand-new Week Preference facility for the GD Constable Examination 2026. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative by SSC, allowing registered candidates to choose their preferred examination week from the available schedule. The move is designed to make the exam process more convenient and candidate-centric, especially given that over 45 lakh applicants are expected to appear for the 25,487 vacancies.

Unlike previous years where candidates had no say in their exam date, the 2026 cycle gives aspirants the flexibility to plan around their academic commitments, travel schedules, or other competitive exams. However, it is important to note that the final allotment of the examination slot is at the discretion of SSC, and the week preference is considered on a best-effort basis depending on centre availability.

⚠️ Important: The slot/week preference window closes on 15 April 2026. Candidates who do not submit their preference will be automatically assigned an exam slot by SSC. No requests for date changes will be entertained after the window closes.

Week Preference Facility Explained

For the first time in SSC’s history, the Commission is offering a “Preference for Weeks” option specifically for the GD Constable exam. This is different from city preference (which SSC has offered before) — here candidates get to select which week suits them best for appearing in the Computer Based Test.

How Does It Work?

The entire exam window of 27 April to 30 May 2026 has been divided into approximately 4–5 weeks. Candidates can log into their SSC account and rank these weeks in order of preference. SSC will then try to accommodate candidates in their preferred week based on seat availability at their allotted exam centre.

🔑 Key Points About Week Preference

  • This is NOT a guaranteed slot — it is a preference that SSC will consider on a best-effort basis.
  • Available only to candidates who have successfully submitted their application before the deadline.
  • Candidates must log in with their Registration Number and Date of Birth.
  • Once submitted, week preferences cannot be changed after the deadline.
  • Non-submission will result in random allocation by the Commission.

How to Select Your Exam Slot — Step by Step

  1. Visit the official SSC website at ssc.gov.in or the regional SSC portal where you registered.
  2. Click on the “Week Preference for Constable (GD) 2026” link on the homepage or under the Candidate Login section.
  3. Log in using your Registration Number and Date of Birth. Complete CAPTCHA verification if prompted.
  4. The system will display your application details — verify your name, roll number, and photo. If there are discrepancies, note them separately.
  5. Select your preferred weeks from the available options (e.g., Week 1: 27 Apr–03 May, Week 2: 04 May–10 May, etc.). Rank them in order of preference.
  6. Review your selections carefully. Once satisfied, click “Submit Preference”. You will receive a confirmation message on screen.
  7. Download or screenshot the confirmation page for your records. No email confirmation is sent by SSC.
💡 Pro Tip: Access the portal during non-peak hours (early morning or late night) to avoid server congestion. The SSC website tends to slow down significantly near the deadline.

Admit Card & City Slip Details

SSC follows a two-step process for issuing exam hall tickets for the GD Constable examination:

Step 1: City Slip (Advance Intimation)

A few days before the exam, SSC releases a City Intimation Slip that informs the candidate about the city and date of their examination. This is typically released 4–5 days before the scheduled exam date. Candidates can download it from the regional SSC website where they had applied.

Step 2: Admit Card

The final Admit Card with the exact exam centre address, shift timing, and hall number is usually released 2–3 days before the exam. This must be printed and carried to the exam hall along with a valid photo ID proof (Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence).

📋 Documents to Carry on Exam Day: Printed Admit Card (colour preferred), one valid photo ID (original), one passport-size photograph, and a transparent water bottle. Electronic devices including mobile phones, smartwatches, and Bluetooth earphones are strictly prohibited.

Expert Tips for Slot Selection

  1. Choose the later weeks if you need more preparation time — the exam runs for over a month, so picking Week 3 or 4 gives you extra days.
  2. Avoid clashes with other exams. If you’re appearing for State Police, Railway, or UPSC exams in the same period, plan your week preference accordingly.
  3. Submit early — don’t wait until 15 April evening. SSC servers crash under load near deadlines, and a technical issue could mean you lose your preference entirely.
  4. Keep screenshots of every confirmation page. SSC does not send email or SMS confirmations for week preference submissions.
  5. Check your application status while logging in for slot preference. Ensure your photo, signature, and personal details are correct — discrepancies can cause issues at the exam centre.
